Styrino is our original brand name of the cheese alternative product that has cheese texture and flavor, developed by Marinfood. The name was derived from two Greek words “styno” which means future or progressive, and “tyri” which means cheese. We named this “Styrino” with our hope that it is going to be a future cheese.

We replaced milk fat with vegetable oil to make this Styrino. Because of this the amount of cholesterol in Styrino is lesser compared with natural cheese.

Styrino was released in October 2007, and is currently available in various types including shred, slice and dice-cut. There are also varieties of a product mixed with cheese and a cholesterol 97% reduced product. As such we work on developing products that accompany customers’ needs. Currently there are shred type for both industrial and home-use, slice type, for vegan, and also “mozzarino” that has a stretching quality, which was difficult to achieve for a long time.

Research and development of Styrino is carried out by its dedicated research group. Here we introduce to you this Styrino Laboratory.

Compared with natural cheese, cost related with manufacturing facility and ingredient can be reduced and is available to dispatch in several days. As vegetable oil is used, cholesterol is largely reduced.

It is to realize the melting and stretching quality by mixing ingredients that are very different from milk, such as starch, vegetable protein and other vegetable ingredients. We succeeded in developing cheese alternative product that does not use animal origin ingredient at all, targeting at vegans and people who have milk allergies.

Vegan diets started in England in 1944.

There are various views about its etymology, the word “vegan” was created taking the parts from “Veg-etari-an”. Vegetarians eat milk and eggs, but vegans do not. So the vegan diet involves excluding not only meat or fish but also eggs and milk.

There are 3 reasons to apply vegan diets
 1. Dietary (in terms with heath)
 2. Environmental (in terms with natural environment)
 3. Ethical (animal welfare and protection)

The number of vegans and vegetarians are increasing in the world, especially in America, England and Germany.

The population of vegans is increasing in recent years in the world. In the USA with the serious health issues in the background, the population of vegans became 6 times bigger in recent years, bringing more vegan menus to restaurants. In England where vegan lifestyle started, the population increased 4 times in 4 years, promoting more non-animal derived materials for cosmetics, clothing and bags. It is expected that a quarter of all the population in England will become vegans by 2025. The vegan food market reached 1.5 trillion yen by 2019, and will reach 2.6 trillion yen by 2025.

Meat alternative was developed for vegans who still like to enjoy the flavor of meat. Its main ingredient is green peas. There is a wide variety of 100% meat alternative products sold at grocery stores overseas, including beef-patty for hamburgers, sausages, and fried chickens.

It realized the likeness of meat not only in looks and tastes but also in cooking experiences. So is clearly distinguished from imitation products.

Vegan Cheese in the World

Cheese is also one of the food products that vegans miss. In Europe, people love cheese. The vegan cheese products from Europe occupy 43% of the world vegan cheese market. Then follows North America, Asia Pacific, South America, Middle East and Africa. The world vegan cheese market is expected to become 390 million US dollars in 2024 from 210 million US dollars in 2016.

Vegans in Japan

As health consciousness is growing, soy bean meat is developed and applied in major restaurant chains in Japan also. Vegan prepared foods and foods to go are sold at convenience stores. Meat alternative products and food products made solely from vegetable ingredients are being developed by several food producers and appear in grocery stores as precooked foods, flavored baked foods, ham, sausages and dessert. A tune-up and reinforcement of vegan requirements of visitors from overseas is demanded.
